GOLDEN FINISH
22nd Asian Athletics Championships came to end yesterday and gave Indians yet another reason to celebrate. This year the championships were held in Bhubaneswar, India. The home advantage proved truly an advantage as India created History in the games. India bagged 29 medals in total to top the table for the first time in 22 editions of Championships. In the total tally of 29 medals, we have 12 Gold and Bronze and 5 silver. In achieving this India left behind the giant China, who finished 2nd.
The half of the Gold medals came from our Girls. From the track events, Nirmala Sheoran and PU Chitra won back to back Golds in 400m and 1500m respectively, while Olympic participant Sudha Singh grabed Gold in 3000m Steeplecase. Winning Gold in 4x400m relay Gold and 4x100m Bronze was no less. Not to forget Dutee Chand, who won bronze in 100m sprint even after all the drama she went through before the starting of the Championships. In the Field events, Manpreet Kaur won Gold in Shot put and others contributed in with the medals in Long jump, Triple Jump and Javelin throw. Last but not the least is, the Gold and Bronze medals in Hepatathlon by Swapna Burman and Purnima Hembram. With this 16 of total 29 medals are contributed by women.

From the men’s side of competition, track was dominated by Indians. Winning Gold in 5 events out of 12. Other than these events, India won bronze in two different events. Govindan Lakshmanan alone won 2 Golds in 5000 and 10,000 meter running. while Ajay Kumar Saroj won the 1500m running event. On the other hand, Mohammad Anas, became 1st Indian to win Gold in 400m race in last 42 years. Before going to Field events, Indian Men also won 4x400m relay. In Shot put Tejinder Pal Singh bagged Silver. But India’s best hope in discus throw, Vikas Gowda had tobe content on Bronze. In one of the last events of Championship, Javelin throw, Junior World Champion and world record holder Neeraj Chopra did what was expected from him. Neeraj stuck the Gold with the throw of 85.23m which also created new Championship record. No doubt that in coming years Neeraj will be winning few more medals for our country.

With this, Asian Athletics Championships came to an end. Congratulations to all the medal winners and all the participants of tournament. India performed even better than our expectations. But work does not end here. The World Athletics Championships is starting on 5th of August in London. The Indians need to rest and prepare, so that Asian Champions can repeat their Golden Finish at world level.
