QUEST BEGINS...
Next two weeks are going to be action packed. Wimbledon park is all set for this year’s competition. The grass is cut, the players have arrived, the draws are made and now we wait for tournament to open. The Wimbledon is starting on Monday and it means history guaranteed. But before we start, it is kind of our duty to know about the seedings and draws and projected progress of top seeds. So, let’s get warmed up to enjoy the tournament to fullest.
Beginning from the Ladies’ singles, most time winner, Serena Williams, is out of play due to Pregnancy. Sharapova is not playing again in this grand slam. With defending Champion not playing and Marion Bartoli retired, the only Ladies Singles champions (in last 10 years) that remain in draws are Venus Williams and the returned queen, Petra Kvitova. The major focus will be on them to repeat their triumphs again. Venus the five times Winner and Kvitova two times Winner. Other than them last years runner up Anglique Kerber is seeded 1st and will try hard to come over her failure in Roland Garros. The 2nd seed is 2017 runner up of Roland Garros, Simona Halep. The unexpected defeat in the finals in something she will try to leave behind before starting the campaign. The name that cannot be left behind is, this years French Champion, Jelena Ostapenko. She has already warned us to watch out for her in Wimbledon, now let’s see if she is true to her words. Apart from that, the Ladies’ tournament is not new to surprises and new Champions. The Wimbledon is the grand slam that so far has been less affected by new comers as many champions maintained their titles. Let’s wait and see what this year holds.
Moving on to the Gentlemen’s draw, the centre of attraction (like every time) are Big 4. The last man who won the Championships aside of Big 4 is Lleyton Hewitt way back in 2002. Since then Big 4 have overshadowed everyone else. This year as well, the chance of breaking this 15 years streak is very minimal. The defender of the title is Andy Murray of Britain and no doubt he will give his best to come over ‘not so good’ 6 months. Novak Djokovic who kept struggling in every tournament so far, will surely want to find his lost momentum. Considering last 6 months, we can say, two giants of the tennis are back. First 6 months of the season are dominated by Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal. Judging from their games, every sports fan is hoping for the BIG final; Nadal vs. Federer. To perform his best in London, Federer skipped entire clay season, whereas Rafa skipped all grass warm ups to stay fit in Wimbledon. For Federer this is Home Coming as he targets his 8th Wimbledon title. But the draws seems to be tougher, for both one of them. All 4 of them have huge obstacles between them and the Golden trophy. Few of them are, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic, Domnic Thiem and Sasha Zverev. One thing we can say (from the past records), no matter how big challenges are, at least one of the Big 4 will be seen in the Finals.
The Wimbledon in not just any other tournament, it’s one of the most celebrated event of not just tennis but of sports world. Every player gives their best in the Wimbledon. Now the only thing we can do is wait for tomorrow morning and hope for the best tennis. With the dawn in London, while the world watches over, Quest to Greatness begins…
