THE MIXED SUNDAY
Yesterday was jammed pack with sports and that too with India in action in 3 different sports. Badminton, Hockey and Cricket, Indian men were fighting for wins. As the day progressed Indian men gave all they could to make India proud; and succeeded too. On Sunday, somewhere we won, somewhere we could not. All in all this Sunday was full of mixed emotions.
In Indonesia, the young Indian showed a first-class performance to win his first title of the year. Kidambi Srikanth, played some best badminton as he beat Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai 11-21,19-21, to win Indonesian Open. The guy who struggled with injury at the start of the year, showed zero sign of weakness in final. A strong and aggressive shot over the net that Japanese never returned and the gold was struck. Spreading his arms over his head and with his brightest smile across his face, the champion accepted well deserved win. With this win Srikanth became the first Indian to win Men’s Singles title in Indonesian Super Series. After playing back to back super series finals and a week of brilliantly played badminton, Srikanth is well pumped up for Australian Open Super Series. If he maintain the level of his game there is no stopping him.
Half a world across, in London, India was fighting against the arch rivals Pakistan in the Semifinal of Hockey World League. Indian tackled the challenge aggressively to register the biggest win the History over Pakistan. In registering 7-1 victory, men in Blue did everything the country expects from them. The first strike from Harmanpreet Singh on 13th minute and then back to back goals. A goal for Pradeep Mor and 2 goals a piece for Harmanpreet, Talwinder and Akashdeep settled the matter at full time. In whole match India gave no chance to opposition to strike back. Never forgetting the bitterness of recent events in the country, Indian hockey players also sported the black bands in respect of Martyrs. Thank you Indian Hockey Team for the win and this heart warming gesture.
Last but not the least. The same two teams were fighting in the Finale of Champions Trophy, in the same city. But in Cricket it was not India’s day. Fakhar survived because of no ball when he was on 3 and it proved to be turning point of the match for India. Yet Pakistan deserves a round of applause for their performance, the passion they showed throughout the match and the way the corrected the mistakes from last game. Congratulations to them for winning the Champions Trophy. The side that had nothing to lose won it all.
Yes, India ended up as runner-up and lost to arch rivals, but let’s take this opportunity to thank them for entertaining us non stop. It was because of team’s great performance that India reached the final. This is time to show the team that, country is by their side through the thick and thin. It is time to make them realise that, they have support of 1.25 billion people on their back and not the pressure of expectation. Forgetting everything we will cheer you Indian team in upcoming series against West Indies as well.
The day full of wins and joy, ended up with less expected loss in Cricket. But don’t let the sadness of one loss get over the celebration of two wins. Let’s prove, be it any sport, win or loss, we always support our team India.
