MANY FIRSTS IN TENNIS
Every Grand Slam event holds surprises and the winners of grand slams become immortal in the history books forever. The 126th edition of French open was no exception to that fact. In the every event history was chased in one way or the other. Let’s have a look how it went in Paris.
Let’s start from the event of mixed doubles. Where India broke it’s duck in this year’s French Open. While all Indians fall short, Rohan Bopanna with his Canadian partner Gabriela Dabrowski went to win the final. With this win Bopanna added one more grand slam in India’s grand slam tally and became the 4th Indian to win a grand slam. This win also put a full stop to his 14 years drought of Grand slams. In other doubles event, Men’s doubles, the pair of Harrison-Venus wrote their name on Trophy. While in women’s doubles the top seeded pair of Safarova and Mattek- Sands emerged as winners.

Heading towards the last days of tournament, we witnessed the final of women singles. The event was not exempted from creating history. Match was played between Simona Halep of Romania and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia. Both players chasing their 1st grand slam title. The favourite to win the title, Halep was in control from the start of the match. Winning the 1st set comfortably and leading in 2nd, 3-0. Then Ostapenko fought her way back. From there, Latvian played like never before to win herself a title of French Open Champion. A young girl celebrated her 1st Grand Slam win just 2 days after her 20th Birthday. She is the first Latvian woman to win Roland Garros is also a first unseeded player to win it since 1933. If she plays like this in upcoming years, there is no doubt she can win much more. Other players should watch out for her in the next month’s Wimbledon.

The tournament wrapped up with last event of men’s singles final and Nadal holding up the trophy for the 10th time in his career. The final between Clay King, Rafa Nadal and 2015 French champion Stan Wawarinka, proved yet again that, when you are playing Nadal in French final there is no chance of winning it. The Spaniard played as it suits to the King. In a one sided encounter, Nadal ruthlessly destroyed Wawarinka in just 2hrs and 5mins, extending his winning streak in Roland Garros final to 10-0 and achieving La Decima. This was Nadal’s 15th Grand Slam title, beating Pete Sampres’s 14. The unreal numbers of Rafa on clay, is probably the longest page in tennis history.
