GET READY TO GET "RED"
As summer reaches it’s peak and then slowly moves to rain, it is time to change the court in tennis. It is time for 2nd part of season and what happened on hard court is a past, because the clay season is just few hours away. Stretched through 2 months, it is a season of weekly tournaments all over the Europe. April the 16th, marks the start of not just most beautifully located tournament, Monte Carlo, but also of clay season.
Hard court season brought us back vintage rivalry between Federer and Nadal, gave us the glimpse of gen next and struggle of top players like Djokovic and Murray. It is now time to leave everything behind and start a fresh. As we head for the clay, more is depended on the style of playing and adaption of the surface. We have seen the top players like Djokovic, Murray and even Federer struggling on the clay throughout the years.
Roger Federer is believed to be a greatest player to play the game, but even he took 6 years to win the Roland Garros after winning his first grand slam in 2003. Even for Djokovic, it took 3 attempts to win French open trophy. In many ways the surface have proved itself the toughest for players, everyone except Nadal. The ‘King of Clay’ for a reason. Winner of french open crown 9 times, Monte Carlo 9 times, Barcelona 10 times and Madrid open 3 times, is yet unbeaten in Roland Garros final. The red Clay suits his playing style more than any other surface. Only other player in last decade who took only one final to win french open is Stan Wawarinka, who beat Djokovic in 2015 final.
We have some big ATP tournaments lined up for clay season, like Monte Carlo, Barcelona open, Madrid open and Rome, before we go to Paris for french Open. With Federer skipping all other clay tournaments before coming to Paris, it is an opportunity for all others to win. Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are retuning from the injury breaks in Monte Carlo. Wawarinka will be there to make the things hard for everyone. And also Nishikori who won Barcelona in 2014 and 2015. We saw in first three months the gen next also produced the raging battel against top players.
As the red courts are coming in the view, the questions are, are we gonna see Djokovic defend his French crown? Or youngsters like Nick Kyrgios, Domnic Theim and Grigor Dimitrov will eliminate all others? Or will we witness yet another vintage battle between Fedal? Or will we be seeing Nadal laying in red clay after regaining french crown for 10th time after gap of 2 years? Or the French Open will get a new champion? Answers to these questions and many others lay in action of next 2 months. So get ready for action packed clay season. Get ready to get Red.
